PROTECT YOUR LOVED ONES FROM UNDUE HARM

Although spiders are generally viewed as beneficial creatures keeping other creepy crawlies at bay, a number of our most common spiders have quite painful bites, which may even require medical treatment. So if you have small children and pets at home or aren’t much of a fan of spiders yourself, you will want the spiders gone! Frontline Pest Management has a specialist spider control treatment which has proven successful over the years. Spiders can be divided into two main groups –

•   Webbing spiders;

•   Crawling or hunting spiders

Webbing Spiders

As the name suggests, these spiders build and live in webs and use this to catch their prey. Mature spiders, when moving in search of food, produce a strand of silk which is carried by the wind until it comes into contact with a building or other stationary object. The spider then travels across this strand of silk and proceeds to build a new web.

Most common household spiders spin their webs over lamps, in curtains, railings, around windows and gutters. Under some conditions, spiders are considered beneficial because they feed on insects. However the unsightly webs used to catch the insects usually outweigh the beneficial aspect.

Management of webbing spiders can include physical measures like trying to eliminate or reduce the food supply (insects) in the infested area e.g. turning off external lights at night. Temporary measures can include the physical removal of webs, however this will not eliminate the spider population.

Most effective chemical management involves sprays that target the spider directly. Chemical on the webs is not always effective since most webbing spiders hang on using claw-like structures which do not readily absorb chemical residues. However, it is recommended that webs do not be removed for a couple of weeks after spraying.

Crawling or hunting spiders

These spiders do not live on webs but instead are nomadic, making their home under leaf litter or bark, in hollows or purpose built burrows and in general garden areas. Unlike webbing spiders, they hunt down their prey or lie in wait to ambush their prey.

Although they may be looking for potential prey, these spiders will often find their way into your home during the warmer months to escape the summer heat. Squeezing into gaps under doors and windows is natural behaviour and once inside they will gladly make your house into their home.

It is quite difficult to target huntsman with a treatment. However, as they are hanging around your home looking for potential prey, a general pest treatment to the outside of the house to eliminate insects and web-building spiders, will make your house less attractive to these huntsman.

Control of crawling/hunting spiders inside of the home is often limited to removal or elimination of each individual spider. Unless the species is considered dangerous, the best method of dealing with these spiders is to move them back into their habitat.

Keeping the perimeter of your home clear of vegetation and garden beds, and ensuring your insect screens are in good order and well fitting, will also help.

What spider control treatments do we provide?

The spider control treatment uses a specialist spider spray to treat the outdoors surfaces of buildings (especially the eaves and windows door frames) and any cracks and crevices where spiders may be hiding around the yard (fences, sheds and play equipment). This treatment targets web-building spiders such as the red back and black house spiders.

How the treatment works

The spray leaves a residual insecticide on the surface of treated areas. When the spiders crawl across the surface, they pick up the insecticide and will eventually die. After a treatment, leave any webs in tact for a couple of weeks to ensure that the spider comes out of their hiding place onto the treated web. Once the spiders have been controlled, remove the webs by brush. Do not hose the webs away with water – this will wash the treatment away, losing the benefits of long-term protection.

How to keep spiders out of your home

•   Keep garden beds away from the edge of the house. As spiders like to hide in mulch and vegetation, doing so will significantly reduce the spider population.

•   If garden beds next to the house are retained it is important to keep vegetation trimmed back from the edge of the house and paths. This will prevent garden spiders building their large webs across paths.

•   Remove piles of wood and waste material from around the house – a favourite hiding place for red back spiders.

•   Ensure well fitting insect screens – this will prevent any unwanted visitors in the first place.

Spiders can be a particular nuisance in the home. They are attracted to warm, dark small spaces, like wall cracks, corners, air vents, and in the eaves of your home.

Other spider species prefer to stay closer to the outdoors, weaving their webs in your garden or near your outside lighting. Most spiders are a nuisance primarily because of their webbing.

Signs of a spider infestation

In general, spiders can be found in dark, secluded areas, both in your home and garden.

•  Look for spider webs – The size and shape of spider webs vary by species.

•  Some spider species live in burrows rather than webs, while others are free-ranging and take refuge in crevices.

•  Some species of spiders are attracted to moist environments.  Check your walls, sheds and other damp locations.

•  Other species can be found in places such as the roof space, the junction of a wall and ceiling, cupboards and storage boxes.

•  Spiders feed on other insects and prey on ants, flies and other spiders, so where there is a plentiful supply of other insects, spiders will wait to find their next meal.

As the temperature drops in Autumn, spiders become more active, looking for a mate, and come out of their hiding places. Towards the end of Autumn many die off, but some hibernate until the following Spring.

Spider eggs are laid into a silken sac, on average about 100 eggs in each sac, which may be fixed to a surface, hidden in the web or carried by the female. Signs of the sacs fixed indoors indicate that soon there will be more spiders around.

How to get rid of spiders

Spiders are most likely to enter your home in the autumn in search of a warm place to spend the winter.

The best advice, in general, is to leave them alone. This can be difficult for the millions of people who have a real fear of spiders.

Majority of spider infestations are more of an annoyance – particularly their webs. However, on occasions, more serious situations can occur especially when it involves some of the dangerous spiders we have here in Australia.

How to prevent spiders

•  Vacuum regularly, high and low – particularly sheltered spots such as beneath worktops, backs of cupboards or under/behind large furniture.

•  Remove noticeable webs – on a regular basis.

•  Fill in gaps – in walls, around pipework and under doors to deter entry.

•  Remove sheltering sites – like firewood piles, garden bags, compost piles and general clutter from near your property.

•  Deter all insects – use lighting in a way that is less attractive to the insects (flies) that spiders feed on.
